January 2015
Fourth graders are working hard on mixing the secondary and tertiary colors for the color wheel. Tertiary colors are the ones with 2 names, like yellow-green or red-orange. They will use the colors they mixed as a table group to paint their next project.

4th grade is just on a roll with their amazing artwork. I hope they feel stronger creatively after these great art projects. This project was presented and facilitated by my student teacher from UNI, Miss V. Students learned about Paul Klee, and then constructed a castle inspired by his work. They then reviewed the color mixing process and painted these using only the three primary colors to mix.

These are some great examples of optical illusion art! We looked at the early work of Bridget Riley and started with a black line pattern that was repeated down the page. We then looked at Bridget Riley's later work where she added color to her optical illusion. We chose to add that as well, and it had a pleasing effect!

It is amazing too see the growth from third grade to fourth grade. This Gustavo Klimt project is a great example of this growth and a successful project to start our year! The sleepy people help us identify where we might want to be during the hard transition back to school hours.
March 2014
Fourth graders have been focusing on COLOR!! They have mixed the secondary and tertiary colors from the primaries and then used those colors to do some painting. Students produced 2 pencil drawings that were exactly the same. Then using the paint they had mixed, chose 2 sets of family (analogous) colors to paint each with. I love the way each set makes the picture look different!

Progress is being made on these optical illusion pictures!! It is amazing how powerful art can be! Students are really getting a lesson on using a ruler to make straight lines. I remind them often to use a wide L hand so that ruler doesn't move on them. They are getting it!

Fourth graders just finished some awesome projects and we are ready to begin something new! Students are learning about optical illusions (Op Art) and the artwork of Bridget Riley. We are going to harness the power of lines and make our brains believe something is there when actually it is not!! Stay tuned!!
September 10th
4th graders are finishing the patterns in the fabric of their sleepy people. We were inspired by Gustav Klimt, an Austrian artist well known for his gold paintings. These students are using my metallic colored pencils to the nub. I have seriously started using an exacto knife to sharpen those that don't fit into the sharpener anymore. They will work though. We will work on these another week at least!
Time Travel to March 25th
4th graders finished their radial symmetry projects and they are currently displayed either in the hallway at Lowell Elementary or the Administration building, downtown Waterloo. They did great! Students are working on a Comic Strip project, where their goal is to show ACTION and EXPRESSION in their drawing! We look at Garfield EVERYDAY!!!

Our OPTICAL ILLUSION project was a success!! We looked at some artwork from Bridget Riley and it inspired us to make some eye popping artwork of our own! It got confusing at times, but that didn't stop us! After we got the hang of using a ruler like professionals, we added the curve lines to make it look like the hand was popping right out of the paper!! Hopefully you all saw these at home over break, and maybe even some different versions as students took this technique and tried new things!!!!
November 26
red-orange, orange, and yellow orange
Family colors are any 3 colors next to eachother on the color wheel. This is the next color element that the 4th graders are learning. They made pictures of the exact same thing, traced them with sharpie marker and then chose 2 sets of family colors (not overlapping) to paint them. They used the 12 colors that they had mixed themselves to paint the family color paintings.
November 19
Complimentary colors are colors furthest across from eachother on the color wheel! They work well together, even make the other look better (compliment)! Look for all this work to come home after our long color unit! Soon.......
October 15th
Well, it's not frosting, but it's still fun! 4th graders are learning how to mix secondary (orange, green, and purple) colors and tertiary (red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet) from the 3 primary colors. Students used water colors to mix these colors. Students understood the concept of mixing these colors, but the paint was not always cooperative. After a complimentary color lesson next, we will mix colors again but with tempra paint. This material is easier to control when mixing. 4th graders will continue learning about color!!
October 1st
That looks beautiful and delicious!
See below how our sleepy people turned out!!!
This was a new project for me. The color mixing was not new, but the material that we used to mix, I had not done with students before. FROSTING COLOR WHEELS are what the 4th grade students will be talking about! They used the 3 primary colors (red, yellow and blue) to mix the secondary colors (orange, green and purple). Then students used these beautiful colors they mixed to do a "painting" on a graham cracker canvas. Thanks to HY-VEE food stores for their $25.00 donation towards this project!
