5th graders are starting the year with a challenge. I have asked them to show me what they know about pattern. I will choose the best of the best examples of pattern to be displayed throughout the whole year on a bulletin board. 5th graders are showing their expertise and I appreciate their hard work!

Fifth grade is doing paper mâché. This is the BIG fifth grade project they look forward to every year! Many of then have asked me year after year, "when can we do a mask?" And the answer is 5th grade! It starts slow and they all look the same, but by the end of the project, we will be working fast and furious with no mask like another! Just wait and see!!!

Fifth grade had a short and fun experience with printmaking this month. Our goal was to make a stamp and stamp 3 cards to give friend and family. It was fun, but too fast. I hope they can continue working with printmaking in the future!
November 2014
Fifth graders had fun being challenged with a new material. They planned for and produced some great foil embossed work that was great! I was hardly able to get a picture of their work, as they wanted so badly to take it home!

Third through fifth grade students started the year off by being "hired" to design new Lowell shirts! This was a fun project although it has been unfortunately a long time getting back to the students as to which image was chosen. We are still working with the t-shirt company in getting the final design, but fliers and informations should be coming home about a new shirt available for purchase from school. The students had fun and learned a little about the business of t-shirt design!
March 2014
After months of working on papier mache masks, we have some great work to show!! Students started planning for these before winter break and have been working hard to get to the painting part. We will still have the opportunity to add yarn, wire, beads, feathers and more to these before they are ready to display and eventually send home!

As the 5th graders finish their foil embossing, they will begin planning for Red Ribbon Week posters. Red Ribbon Week is a time when we celebrate being drug, alcohol and tobacco free! These posters will be displayed around the school!

I am so impressed with the 5th grade foil emboss project! I wanted to take pictures of ALL of them!! Here are a few. The students planned a focus for their work and then filled around their focus with pattern and design. I do not often get to display these in our school because the students are so excited to take them home! This is a fun and memorable project!
September 10
Fifth graders are my EXPERTS!! I ask them to make pattern squares at the beginning of each year to be displayed for the rest of the school for the entire school year. They are making at least 3 different patterns using line shape and color. These pictures are from last year. Pictures of this year's experts will be up as soon as possible.
Time Travel to March 25th
It is finally here!! MASKS! Students ask about this project starting in Kindergarten: "When can we make a mask?" and I answer "When you are a fifth grader!" This project does go a little slow at first, but I hope April will bring no snow days or late starts!!!!! We have lots of fun things to make these masks POP!!
January 7
I am going to let the pictures do the talking for this foil embossing project!!!
November 26
Foil embossing is the next 5th grade project. I like to do some different and special projects with 5th graders. This on one of those "not just paper" projects and I emphasize the importance of planning for 2 reasons: #1. I want you to like what you have done!! #2. I will not give you another piece of metal if you "mess up". We started in our journals for an idea. Once they had an idea they liked, it was drawn on a piece of paper, that was the exact size of the metal. Then using a dull pencil, we pressed the picture into the metal. We will add some color to these and they should be coming home before our next break.
October 15th
No, ants do not do drugs! Neither do we! 5th graders are finishing up their Red Ribbon Week posters and they should be displayed around the school by the end of next week! It It would have been nice to see them this Thursday and Friday for art class, but conferences are important too, i guess. :) We will work hard next week eto get them done and up!

This is an image from last years Red Ribbon
Week celebration.
5th graders are still working on their Red Ribbon Week posters!
September 10th
Most of the 5th graders have finished their pattern squares and they are starting to go up on the display board for the rest of the year!
I have introduced the next project and the students have started planning in their journals for RED RIBBON WEEK POSTERS! This is a week where we celebrate as a school being drug, alcohol and tobacco free. It can be a tough topic because, like me, students might have some family members that smoke or drink alcohol. I address this as a group and ask the students if the people they know have ever tried to stop smoking. Were they able to stop?? Usually more then half of the students say the people they know were unable to stop. I use this as a powerful example: Whatever is in those are very addictive and it is VERY hard to stop, so we don't ever want to start smoking, or even try it. We move on from their talking about positive images and words we can use on our posters. Red Ribbon Week is officially October 20th-28th, so look for 5th grader posters in the hall before that!
